The Hiker Dog

We just returned from a week at Grayson Highlands State Park. Toby hiked his little heart out. We are so lucky to have a dog who loves to hike as much as we do. He's a super camper too - doesn't bark, is fearless in thunderstorms, sleeps well under the picnic table and in the tent with us. He spotted a deer in the woods while hiking off-leash, gave chase, and seconds later before serious panic set in, he trotted back to us. Yay for recall training! (After that we kept him leashed though. Good thing too, as we spotted several more deer later on.)

Here's a slide show of our hiker dog's exploits this week:

Another wonderful mountain dog needs our thoughts and "good vibes" today. KB Bear's beautiful R is very ill. Please visit Romping and Rolling in the Rockies to wish R well.

    1. Thanks! Heading over now to see what you've been up to! No internet or cell signal in the mountains so I get out of the blogville loop. So much goes on in a week!

  2. I can just imagine how much more fun chasing a deer is to a dog than walking with humans through a forest full of the most incredible smells. Good that you recall worked but we usually resort to the leash too whenever there is prey around. My Poodles are not known to be predators, but you never know what happens away from the familiar.

    1. So right! We had to find out the hard way as usual but staying leashed is far safer when in the wilderness.

    1. It really is. Especially because of the variety of landscapes - highlands, woods, balds, waterfalls, meadows. A little of everything and even wild ponies as you saw in the video.
