Thoughtless Thursday: I Don't Often Rant, But When I Do...

Today on Thoughtless Thursday, the random thought that has been bugging me is:

Yes, I AM a bad blogger. Just put the dunce cap on and show me to my stool in the corner.

I happened to spot this on Facebook and made the mistake of looking at it. Feeling confident? Go ahead and read:
https://www.viralheat.com/blog/2014/03/04/are-you-a-bad-blogger/

This post, courtesy of Viral Heat and Sukhraj Beasla, gives an indictment for crimes of the blogosphere. It kinda hit a nerve.

1. You're not publishing regularly. GUILTY.
I have hobbies. Vacations. Grandchildren and children who visit sometimes. Viruses. A  nonblogger husband, and I'm certainly not training a new one after 35 years getting this one used to all my quirks! You get the idea. No, May 2014 was not a good blogging month.

What I might be doing when I'm not blogging…

2. You're not managing your time properly. GUILTY.
See #1. I have hobbies, and blogging is one of them. It is not my job (not that there's anything wrong with that). I actually did try an editorial calendar in February. It wasn't a good fit for me.  I kept skipping the planned posts to write what I wanted to say instead. Also, I beg to differ about time management. If the sun is out and it's 75 degrees, spending the afternoon on the computer sounds like bad time management to me.

3. You don't know how much traffic you're getting, what SEO is, etc.
GUILTY. "If you don't know how much traffic you're getting, chances are the numbers are low." One look at my sidebar and you have to agree. But wait - I know what SEO is; does that count?

4. You don't have a plan for your blog. GUILTY? This one stumps me. What plan? Should it be a dollar amount, a number of followers, winning certain awards? I try to have fun, write well, share decent photos, share my love of the outdoors and life in general. I know my blog isn't the best one out there - because I follow lots that are better than mine (hop below, or scroll down to the bottom for some of them).
If blogging becomes a competition or a numbers game, I don't think I'll be blogging for very long.

Well, actually, probably not out doing this!

So Sukhraj Beasla, get out of my head. And please don't read my blog. You wouldn't like it.

  1. Great post, very interesting.
I think your blog should just depend on what you yourself is looking for. If you aim to be a well known blogger, then a lot of things are important. If you aim to work with different companies doing sponsored posts, then these things are important. However, I think if you bog just to blog and have fun, and it is really more of a personal use for you, then I wouldn't worry about it to much.

  2. We all should do what we most enjoy and that is all. No point trying to be like other people. What suits you is what counts. They make fair points but if your are too serious surely the enjoyment goes out of the window. Have a tremendous Thursday.
    Best wishes Molly

  3. I think you nailed it in your first point, this isn't what you are doing for a living. This is a hobby. Therefore, enjoy it as one.

For people who want to make a living at it, well you do have to treat it like a job, or like most jobs if you aren't working you aren't earning.

Don't let others steal the joy from something you enjoy.

  5. I agree with you 100%. I blog as a hobby. Actually, a few times, I've accepted "jobs" associated with my blog (e.g., do a post for a company or test a product for a company) - and I instantly don't feel like blogging.

So, I feel the same way as you do. The only reason why I usually post every day (except vacations or other odd events) is that I'm trying to improve my photography. I take photos every day... so I blog everyday, if that makes any sense.

BTW, all of a sudden, your "Terra Toby" blog started appearing for me again. I don't know what was going on with that.

  6. Hi Y'all!

Hey, blogging should be fun. For me it started as a diary to remember special moments in time. My Human helps by taking photos for me to post.

    Have fun!

    Y'all come by now,

  7. I love this. If that article is accurate, I, too, am in the "Bad Bloggers Club." If it brings you joy, that's all that matters :)

  10. I read that article too! I also came up lacking. I agree with what some others said, those things are only important if you are trying to make money or make a job of blogging, or if you just simply are competitive and want to be the best!
Judging from the photos, you have a darn good life and I wouldn't change a thing if I were you!

  11. I actually wrote something close to this other post that has upset you but mine was a list of things you need to invest in a blog to make money at it. It names many of the things this other post did but I do not think you lacking in any of those make you a bad blogger. That means you blog as a hobby for yourself. There are many wonderful blogs including yours that are not interested in monetizing and that is great. If you enjoy your blog and are happy with it, no one should be able to say it is bad. From the pictures, it looks like you a full life and we are all lucky you share some of that with your blog and us.
