Walls or bridges? Separation or unity?
For us humans this is a political, ethical, and perhaps a philosophical question.
For wildlife it is life or death. Genetic islands of species don't survive. They will die out. It's that simple, yet so complex that it took ecologists many years to understand this truth.
Here are some wonderful wildlife bridges.

Thank you to whoever put this on Facebook today. I clicked to the source, The World Geography, in my excitement at how well this fit with yesterday's Black and White photo of Toby. I couldn't find the FB post again in my newsfeed.

Hey Amy...very interesting post and bridges. Toby looking good in b&w!
ReplyDeleteHow ironic you were at Duke labs. My son in law works at the NCSU SEAFOOD LAB IN MOREHEAD CITY AND MY daughter works at NCSU's Center for Marine Science and Technology in Morehead city. Both facilities work closely with Duke and UNC labs. How long ago were you there? Beaufort and Morehead City are beautiful cities.

Love your picture and the saying. So very true. I had never seen the overpass in Banff before. Wish I had known it was there when I was visiting. Would have been cool to see in person.
ReplyDeleteWonderful Sunday post. Loved it.
Bridges are meant to be crossed to learn all about the other side...
ReplyDeleteYes, it is. Golden Thanks for sharing. Love the Netherlands bridge. Toby's photo is PAWsome ... love the back shot and the quote. Hope you guys are having a great weekend. Golden Woofs
ReplyDeleteThose are fabulous and we have never seen those before so it was a real treat. Have a marvellous Monday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
those are a great idea!xx Speedy
ReplyDeleteFabulous!!!! We need some kind of connectivity between wildlands in our world so much. I even feel it as a mtn biker. I can cover a lot of ground, and I choose to avoid roads as much as possible. So, I know where the "barriers" are, and I bet that the animals run into those same barriers.
ReplyDeleteThere was article about mountain lions in California and their problems due to the lack of connectivity. Here's the link: http://news.sciencemag.org/biology/2014/08/real-mountain-lions-la-county
